Watkins 29
Description
The Watkins 29 (also known as the W29) is an American fiberglass cruising sloop designed by Walter Scott in conjunction with the Watkins brothers (in-house development at Watkins Yachts). It was built by Watkins Yachts of Clearwater, Florida, as an evolution of the popular Watkins 27 Mk II—featuring raised hull sides (eliminating the raised deck), a lengthened and widened hull for improved stability and interior volume, and a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder. Introduced in 1984, it served as a roomy, value-oriented coastal cruiser with solid hand-laid fiberglass construction, encapsulated ballast, a relatively heavy displacement for a comfortable motion, and accommodations for 5–6 people including a V-berth, saloon settees, galley, and head. Production ran from 1984 to 1988, during which approximately 60 boats were completed; in 1988 the model received minor modifications (including a reverse transom) and was renamed the Watkins 30, with the two sharing a continuous serial number sequence (combined production around 90 hulls).
