Wauquiez Pilot Saloon 40 (PS 40)
Description
The Wauquiez Pilot Saloon 40 (also known as the PS 40) is a French fiberglass deck-saloon cruising sloop designed by Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design. It was built by Chantier Wauquiez (Henri Wauquiez shipyard) in northern France as part of the innovative Pilot Saloon series that emphasizes raised saloon with panoramic visibility, protected navigation, and comfortable liveaboard features while maintaining good sailing performance. Introduced in 2000, it features solid GRP construction (hand-laid or infused elements), a fin keel with bulb (standard draft around 6.5–6.6 ft / 2.00 m), spade rudder, aluminum Sparcraft mast with in-mast furling option, powerful yet easily handled masthead sloop rig, and high-quality interior joinery (typically two double cabins with en-suite heads). The layout includes a bright, elevated saloon, linear galley, and spacious cockpit, making it ideal for coastal or bluewater cruising with a small crew or family. Production ran from 2000 to 2005, during which approximately 120 boats were completed—a respectable number for this premium semi-custom class—before the model was succeeded by larger variants like the PS 41/42.
