Wellington 44
Description
The Wellington 44 is an American fiberglass bluewater cruising cutter designed and built by Bill Wellington through Wellington Boats Inc. (also referred to as Wellington Yachts) in Jacksonville, Florida. Introduced around 1970, it was developed as a robust, "overbuilt" center-cockpit offshore cruiser with a focus on seaworthiness, positive foam flotation for unsinkability, and heavy displacement construction suited to long-distance passagemaking or liveaboard use. The hull features solid fiberglass layup, a keel/centerboard configuration (shoal draft with board up for gunkholing or deeper access when needed), skeg-hung rudder, cutter rig for easy sail management in varying conditions, and a practical interior with good headroom (around 6'2"), multiple cabins, and two heads. Production occurred primarily in the 1970s through early 1980s as a semi-custom or low-volume model; exact quantity built is not widely documented but appears limited (likely fewer than 50 hulls given the scarcity of listings and references today).
