Wellington 47
Description
The Wellington 47 is a heavy-displacement American fiberglass bluewater cruising yacht (often configured as a center-cockpit cutter, with ketch rig also available) based on Alden Design No. 1009 (Alden Islander 47). It was designed by John G. Alden Inc. and built on a semi-custom basis by Wellington Boats Inc. (founded by Bill Wellington) in Jacksonville, Florida. Introduced in 1969, the model emphasized "overbuilt" construction with thick hand-laid fiberglass laminates, a keel/centerboard underbody (full or modified keel for excellent tracking and self-steering), skeg-hung rudder, generous tankage, and a robust layout suited to liveaboard or extended offshore passage making, including a large master stateroom aft, U-shaped galley, high headroom (over 6'4"), and extensive teak/mahogany interior joinery. Production ran from 1969 to 1980, during which only 24 boats were completed—a low-volume run reflecting its purpose-built nature for sailors prioritizing structural integrity, sea-kindliness, and bulletproof reliability over speed or lightness.
