Westsail 42
Description
The Westsail 42 is a heavy-displacement American fiberglass bluewater cruising cutter (with ketch and occasional yawl variants also offered) designed by William I.B. "Bill" Crealock as his ideal no-compromise passagemaker for a cruising couple, drawing on traditional double-ender influences while using modern fiberglass construction. It was built by Westsail Corporation (USA) in Costa Mesa, California, with hulls 1–116 laminated between 1974 and early 1980; the molds were later sold to Jomarco, which completed hulls 117–119, for a total of 119 boats produced. The design features ultra-thick hand-laid solid fiberglass construction (often described as "overbuilt" with core samples inches thick), a long keel with attached rudder for excellent tracking and self-steering, encapsulated lead ballast, a center-cockpit layout (the related Westsail 43 used the same hull with an aft cockpit), and a spacious, liveaboard-friendly interior with high headroom, full galley, navigation station, and private cabins.
