Luger Westwind 20 / Southwind 20 / 21

Luger Westwind 20 / Southwind 20 / 21

Description

The Luger Westwind 20 / Southwind 20 / 21 (often grouped together and sometimes marketed or measured as a 21-footer despite an actual LOA of ~20 ft due to gunwale curvature) is a lightweight American fiberglass trailerable daysailer/pocket cruiser designed and built in-house by Luger Industries (Luger Boats) of Burnsville, Minnesota. Introduced around 1967 (with production continuing into the 1980s as part of Luger’s extensive kit-boat lineup), these models were primarily sold as affordable do-it-yourself fiberglass kits or completed boats aimed at entry-level sailors and handymen. The Westwind 20 variant typically featured a centerboard configuration for maximum shoal draft and beaching, while the Southwind 20/21 used a swing keel (retractable) or fin keel option for better upwind performance and stability. Key features include a fractional sloop rig for easy handling, basic cuddy cabin accommodations for 2–4 people (with sitting headroom), positive flotation elements, and a focus on light weight for single-handed trailering and launching rather than heavy-weather offshore capability. Construction used molded fiberglass, with many owner-completed examples leading to some variation in final fit-out and weight. Production numbers are not precisely documented but were moderate within Luger’s kit-boat era (hundreds likely built across the related 20–21 ft models before the company ceased operations around 1987).
