Wharram Hinemoa Catamaran (sloop rig)

Wharram Hinemoa Catamaran (sloop rig)

Description

The Wharram Hinemoa (also known as the Hinemoa Catamaran, with sloop rig variant) is a small British plywood/epoxy self-build coastal cruising catamaran designed by James Wharram (with contributions from partners including Hanneke Boon) as an evolution of his earlier 22 ft Hina design. It was developed in the mid-1960s as part of Wharram's pioneering "Classic Designs" series, inspired by Polynesian double-canoe concepts, and offered exclusively as plans for amateur and professional home builders (no factory production). The design emphasizes simplicity, low cost, and ease of construction using marine plywood over a backbone frame with epoxy and fiberglass sheathing; a modest but unknown number of Hinemoas have been completed worldwide since the 1960s (part of Wharram's overall output exceeding 10,000 plan sets across all designs). Key features include two slim, stable hulls with open bridge deck, basic accommodations for day sailing or overnighting (berths in each hull, with a deck tent option for more space), extremely shallow draft for beaching/gunkholing, and a conservative rig suited to relaxed coastal or light offshore use rather than high performance.
