Wharram Pahi 42 / Captain Cook
Description
The Wharram Pahi 42 (also known as the Pahi 42 Captain Cook) is a British plywood/epoxy self-build cruising catamaran designed by James Wharram (with input from Hanneke Boon and others) as the first in the Pahi series to feature a central deck pod for improved shelter, steering station protection, and additional sleeping space. Introduced in 1979/1980, it marked a step forward in Wharram designs with more rounded "female" hull shapes, greater freeboard, a spacious bridgedeck pod, and flexible rope-lashed crossbeams for shock absorption in ocean waves. Offered exclusively as detailed plans for amateur and professional home builders (ply/epoxy/glass construction over a backbone frame), it has no factory production; an unknown but respectable number of hulls have been completed worldwide since the early 1980s (part of Wharram's overall 10,000+ plan sets sold across designs), with many used for family long-distance cruising and liveaboard ocean voyaging. Key features include extreme shallow draft for beaching/gunkholing, stable platform with open or podded bridge deck, accommodations for 6–8 (bunks in hulls plus pod cabin).
