Wharram Tanenui-Catamaran
Description
The Wharram Tanenui (also known as the Tane Nui or Tanenui Catamaran) is a British plywood or foam/GRP sandwich self-build cruising catamaran designed by James Wharram (with input from his design partners) in 1973. It was developed as a more comfortable and spacious evolution of the earlier Spartan 27 ft Tane design, incorporating increased beam, higher freeboard, and refined Veed hull shapes with fine keels for lateral resistance (no daggerboards required). Offered exclusively as detailed plans for amateur and professional home builders (no factory production), it emphasizes low-budget, sturdy construction using marine plywood/epoxy/glass or foam sandwich methods, with an estimated build time of around 1,000 hours. An unknown but modest number of boats have been completed worldwide since the 1970s (part of Wharram's broader output of over 10,000 plan sets across all designs), with examples used for coastal cruising, family sailing, and occasional ocean passages thanks to the proven seaworthiness of the Classic series hull form.
