Whilly Boat 14'6"
Description
The Whilly Boat (also known as the 14'6" Whilly Boat or Whillyboat) is a charming British glued-lapstrake plywood daysailer/rowing skiff designed by Iain Oughtred as a modern interpretation of traditional Shetland Islands sixerns and ness yoles (with Norwegian historical roots). It was developed in the late 20th century and offered exclusively as plans (typically 5 sheets) for amateur and professional home builders through Oughtred's plans service and suppliers like the WoodenBoat Store (no commercial factory production). A modest but unknown number of boats have been completed worldwide since the design's release, with examples prized for their elegant double-ender lines, light weight, and versatility as a beach cruiser, tender, or protected-water daysailer. Construction uses marine plywood with epoxy, typically four wide strakes per side (spiled and hung), resulting in a strong, lightweight hull that is easy to build without lofting; later revisions by Oughtred added more freeboard and a harder turn of bilge for improved stability.
