Whisp Skiff
Description
The Whisp (also spelled Whisp skiff or Redmond Whisp) is an ultralight American glued-lapstrake plywood sharpie-style skiff designed by Steve Redmond as a versatile, high-performance daysailer/rowboat suitable for oars, sail, or small electric motor. It is offered exclusively as plans for amateur and professional home builders (no commercial factory production), with construction typically using okoume or similar marine plywood in a simple lapstrake configuration (often 4–5 strakes per side) that results in an exceptionally light hull. A modest but unknown number of boats have been completed worldwide since the design appeared in the 1980s–1990s, frequently featured in WoodenBoat magazine launchings and builder stories for its elegant fine lines, ease of cartopping, and delightful performance on protected waters. Key features include a narrow, fast hull with excellent rowing qualities, a simple sprit or balanced lug rig for easy sailing (optional), daggerboard or centerboard, transom-hung rudder, and capacity for 1–3 people—prioritizing minimal weight (around 70 lb bare hull), portability, and fun in light air or as a tender rather than heavy-weather or offshore capability.
