Whitby 27 (Elvstrom 1/4 Ton)
Description
The Whitby 27 (also known as the Whitby 27 1/4 Ton or occasionally referred to as the Elvstrom 1/4 Ton or Bianca 27 in some contexts) is a Canadian fiberglass fin-keel (with skeg-hung rudder) masthead sloop designed by the Danish naval architecture firm Elvstrøm & Kjærulff. It was built by Whitby Boat Works Ltd. in Ajax, Ontario, as a compact, nimble 1/4-ton racer/cruiser with a focus on good light-air performance, responsive handling, and weekend/coastal sailing capability. Introduced in 1976, it featured solid GRP construction, a relatively light displacement for the era, and a practical but basic interior layout suited to 4 people. Production was very short-lived, running only from 1976 to 1977, during which just 16 boats were completed—making it one of the rarest models from Whitby Boat Works (a yard better known for its larger Alberg and Whitby 42 designs).
