Whitby 45
Description
The Whitby 45 is a Canadian fiberglass performance cruiser/masthead sloop designed by George Cuthbertson (of C&C Design) in 1967 for Whitby Boat Works during a transitional period in racing yacht design. It was built by Whitby Boat Works Ltd. in Ajax, Ontario, as a relatively heavy-displacement hull with solid GRP construction below the waterline (balsa-cored deck on many examples), fin keel with skeg-hung rudder, and a generous sail plan for good light-air performance combined with strong seakeeping qualities. The model offered spacious accommodations for a 45-footer of its era, making it suitable for coastal or moderate offshore cruising. Production of the original series ran from 1968 to 1970, during which 16 to 19 boats were completed (some sources cite ~19 total for the primary run); a very rare Mk II variant appeared around 1980 with reduced draft (6 ft), a longer/thicker lead keel, and a redesigned swept-back rudder, but only 2 or 3 of those were built. The design stands out in Whitby’s catalog (better known for traditional full-keel Alberg and Brewer models) as one of their few more performance-oriented offerings, with a cult following today for its rarity, solid build, and capable motion in a seaway.
