Gloucester 18 Whitecap
Description
The White Cap 18 (also known as the Gloucester 18 (Whitecap)) is an American trailerable fiberglass fractional sloop designed by Harry R. Sindle as a simple, affordable daysailer. It was first built around 1974 by Lockley-Newport Boats (sold as the Whitecap or Whitecap 18) and later continued under the Gloucester Yachts name after a company transition, with production running approximately until 1984. The model features solid GRP construction, a centerboard for extreme shoal draft and easy beaching/trailering, positive flotation, and a basic open cockpit layout suitable for 2–4 people on protected or coastal waters. It prioritizes light weight, easy handling, and forgiving sailing characteristics over cruising accommodations or heavy-weather performance. Exact production quantity is not widely documented but appears moderate within the builder’s small-boat lineup, with surviving examples still found on the used market today.
