Whitehall 14
Description
The 14-foot Whitehall sailboat featured in John Gardner's Building Classic Small Craft (1977) represents Gardner's adaptation of the classic New York harbor rowing boat design that originated in the 1820s on Whitehall Street, transforming it into a sailing version suitable for recreational use. Gardner, who served as Associate Curator of Small Craft at Mystic Seaport Museum from 1969 to 1995 and was known as the "Dean of American Small Craft," preserved this traditional design by making plans available and demonstrating how working small craft could be adapted to pleasure use. The original Whitehall design was developed by navy yard apprentices who derived their model from naval gigs, and while exact construction numbers are unknown, Gardner's documentation helped preserve and popularize the type among amateur builders. The sailboat version maintains the characteristic fine-lined hull with lapstrake (clinker) planking over steam-bent oak frames, featuring white cedar planks on an oak backbone with traditional joinery methods. Key features include the classic Whitehall sheerline, fine entry for seaworthiness, and adaptation for single-handed sailing with a simple sloop rig with sprit main sail plan.
