Wilderness 30 SX
Description
The Wilderness 30 SX (also known as the WILDERNESS 30SX) is a lightweight American fiberglass performance cruising/racing sloop designed by Chuck Burns. It was built by Wilderness Boat Works of Santa Cruz, California, as the fractional-rig variant of the standard Wilderness 30, featuring a fin keel with spade rudder, hand-laid fiberglass construction (with Klege-cell core in the deck/hull on some examples), lead ballast, and a focus on spirited sailing with a high sail area-to-displacement ratio. Introduced in 1979, it offers a more responsive, easily driven hull with a fractional sloop rig optimized for coastal racing, fast passage making, or weekend cruising rather than heavy bluewater displacement cruising. The model includes a practical minimalist interior with V-berth, settees, galley, and head, suitable for 2–4 people. Production was low-volume and short-lived (late 1970s to early 1980s), with only a handful of boats completed before the builder ceased operations around 1986.
