Wilderness 40
Description
The Wilderness 40 is an American lightweight fiberglass performance cruiser/racer designed by Gary Mull as a high-performance masthead sloop with fin keel and spade rudder. It was built by Wilderness Boat Works of Santa Cruz, California, introduced in 1980 as the flagship of the short-lived Wilderness line (which also included smaller Chuck Burns designs). The model emphasizes ultralight displacement construction with solid fiberglass layup, a high ballast-to-displacement ratio for stiffness, and a powerful sail plan optimized for fast coastal and occasional offshore sailing in the ULDB spirit popular on the West Coast. It features a practical interior for shorthanded or couple cruising, auxiliary diesel (typically Yanmar), and lines often led aft for easy handling. Production was extremely limited, running only in 1980 (with some later variants incorporating a taller rig for better upwind performance), during which at least 5 hulls were completed before the builder ceased operations around 1986.
