Snark Wildflower
Description
The Snark Wildflower is a compact 11.5-foot (11'6") day-sailing dinghy designed and built in-house by Snark Products Inc. (USA), a company founded by Jim McMullen that produced a range of ultra-affordable, mass-market sailboats; the Wildflower model was manufactured from 1972 to 1979 using the proprietary Corelite/Armorclad construction method consisting of an expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam core vacuum-bonded between layers of ABS plastic (later ASA), creating an exceptionally lightweight (90 lb empty weight), unsinkable, dent- and scratch-resistant hull that required no gelcoat or fiberglass maintenance. It was marketed as an entry-level, user-friendly vessel with a fractional sloop rig, daggerboard keel, open cockpit, and 100 sq ft sail area, offering nimble performance, stability, and easy trailering or car-top transport for beginners and casual recreational sailors; a lateen-rigged variant was sold as the Mayflower. Overall Snark production exceeded hundreds of thousands of boats across all models (specific Wildflower quantity is undocumented), making the brand one of the most prolific sailboat manufacturers of its era.
