Laguna Windrose 5.5
Description
The Windrose 5.5 (also known as the Laguna Windrose 5.5 or simply the Windrose 18 in some contexts) is a small, trailerable recreational keelboat designed by W. Shad Turner. It was built by Laguna Yachts in Stanton, California, starting in 1977 using solid fiberglass construction with a swing keel (cast iron ballast) and transom-hung rudder. Production ran in the late 1970s to early 1980s (with some updated versions featuring increased beam and fixed keel options appearing in the early 1980s); the exact quantity built is not well-documented but was moderate as part of Laguna’s affordable Windrose series of pocket cruisers. It features a fractional sloop rig, basic accommodations for 2–4 (V-berth and quarter berths), and a balance of light-air performance, stability, and easy trailering/launching, making it ideal for coastal daysailing, club racing, or entry-level family use. A later evolution of the earlier Windrose 18, the 5.5 emphasizes a generous sail plan in a compact, responsive package.
