Chesapeake MD Windward 24 Sail Plan III

Chesapeake MD Windward 24 Sail Plan III

Description

The Windward 24 Sail Plan III (by Karl A. Stambaugh / Chesapeake Marine Design) is the gaff-rigged yawl variant among the three sail plans offered with the Windward 24 plywood plans. While Sail Plans I and II use a Bermudan (Marconi) yawl rig with triangular mainsail and mizzen (no headsail in the base configuration), Sail Plan III features a traditional gaff mainsail and gaff mizzen for a more classic Chesapeake workboat aesthetic, better light-air performance, and lower center of effort. This configuration maintains the boat’s character as a trailerable, shallow-draft camp cruiser/daysailer with plywood glue-and-screw construction, generous beam for stability, and basic accommodations. This gaff yawl setup offers excellent balance for single handing, easy reefing, and a traditional look that pairs well with the Windward 24’s workboat-inspired hull. Many builders appreciate the gaff rig for its forgiving nature in coastal or protected waters. Note that exact spar lengths and peak halyard details come with the full plans package from CMD
