Windward 850 (Windward 28)
Description
The Windward 850 (also known as the Windward 28) is a Canadian-built 28-foot masthead sloop designed by John Simpson and constructed by Spencer Boats Ltd. (sometimes listed under Windward Marine Ltd.) in Richmond, British Columbia. Production ran from 1973 to 1982, with a moderate but limited number of hulls built (exact quantity undocumented but considered a short-to-moderate run for the yard). Spencer Boats had a strong reputation for high-quality fiberglass construction, bonding bulkheads and furniture to the hull while still in the mold for rigidity and creating a heavily glassed hull-deck joint for a strong monocoque structure. The design offers a solid fin keel with skeg-hung rudder, making it a capable coastal cruiser with good maneuverability and directional stability for its era.
