Wineglass Wherry 14

Wineglass Wherry 14

Description

The Wineglass Wherry 14 is a lightweight, elegant 14-foot plywood pulling boat (rowing skiff) designed by John Lockwood, founder of Pygmy Boats (Port Townsend, Washington). Introduced in 1990, it draws inspiration from traditional New England beach-launched working craft, blending features of Maine salmon wherries (Penobscot Bay) and New Jersey Seabright skiffs. It uses modern stitch-and-glue construction with wood-core, glass, and epoxy for a rugged yet extremely light hull. Over 1,000 hulls have been built (many from kits or plans), making it one of the more successful small traditional-style rowing boats of its era. Designer John Lockwood built his own example and used it for a month-long, 206-mile family camp-cruising expedition in 1995. The boat excels as a fast, stable rowing skiff for exercise, exploring, or light camp-cruising, with excellent tracking and a wineglass transom for buoyancy and clean water flow astern. It is primarily a rowing boat (not a dedicated sailboat), though some owners have added simple sailing rigs (leg-o’-mutton or sprit) for occasional use.
