Winter Wren

Winter Wren

Description

The Winter Wren (also known as the Winter Wren 19 or Winter Wren 19 Full Keel) is a compact, trailerable pocket cruiser designed by Sam Devlin of Devlin Designing Boat Builders. It is offered as plans (and sometimes kits) for amateur builders using stitch-and-glue plywood construction with fiberglass/epoxy sheathing. The original Winter Wren features a full keel and gaff rig (cutter or sloop configuration), while the later Winter Wren II variant uses a daggerboard for shallower draft and a Bermudan (Marconi) sloop rig. Both versions emphasize elegance, simplicity, and seaworthiness in a small package ideal for a cruising couple—offering basic accommodations (berths, galley space) while remaining easy to trailer and launch. Production is plans-based rather than factory series; an unknown but moderate number of hulls have been built by homebuilders, with examples praised for responsive handling and capability in coastal or protected waters. The original Winter Wren (this boat) is a gaff-rigged cutter/sloop with traditional four-sided mainsail. The Winter Wren II uses a Bermudan sloop rig (mast steps on cabin top for easy raising/lowering).
