Wood Pussy
Description
The Wood Pussy (often styled Wood-Pussy) is a classic 13.5-foot centerboard catboat designed by renowned naval architect Philip L. Rhodes (Design #491) around 1945. It was originally commissioned by Donald B. Abbott as an affordable junior training boat and family day-sailer for adults—stable, forgiving, and nearly impossible to capsize due to its beamy hull and self-righting shallow rudder. The name "Wood Pussy" comes from an old Yankee colloquialism for a skunk: Rhodes saw it as "a very pretty little animal but a tough customer to fool with," perfectly describing the boat's charming looks paired with rugged sailing qualities.
