Wylie 38

Wylie 38

Description

The Wylie 38 is a 38-foot performance racer/cruiser designed in 1984 by California yacht designer Thomas Wylie (of Wylie Design Group and later Wyliecat fame), known for his lightweight, fast hulls optimized for West Coast conditions with excellent surfing ability downwind and strong all-around performance. Boats were built in fiberglass (cored construction) by Westerly Marine in Southern California starting in 1984; the Wylie 38, closely related Wylie 39, and Wyliecat 39 shared the same mold, with a total of approximately 11 hulls produced across these variants. Individual boats often featured owner-customized interiors and rigs, making them versatile for coastal racing (including TransPac considerations) or cruising while maintaining a sleek, low-freeboard profile with a U-shaped hull bottom and flared topsides for buoyancy and stability.
