Wyliecat 17

Wyliecat 17

Description

The Wyliecat 17 (often stylized as Wyli cat 17) is a high-performance, ultralight daysailer designed by Thomas Wylie of San Francisco and built in fiberglass by Moore Sailboats (also associated with Wyliecat Performance Yachts and builder Ron Moore of Santa Cruz, California), with production beginning in 1999. It features an innovative unstayed cat rig inspired by boardsailer designs, including a lightweight carbon fiber mast (about 18-27 ft tall, weighing only 18 lbs), wishbone boom, full-battened sail with halyard, and an extremely low rig weight (entire rig including sail around 39-42 lbs), paired with a deep bulb lifting keel for stability and self-righting capability; the open-transom cockpit, simple one-string operation, and trailering-friendly design make it an ideal trainer or fun performance boat for a crew of two or three, emphasizing speed, ease, and minimal complexity over traditional sloop rigs. No exact total quantity built is documented in available sources, though examples continue to appear in racing and for sale, reflecting limited but dedicated production of this niche ultralight model.
