X Boat 342 Masthead Rig (X-342 MH)
Description
The X-342 Masthead Rig (also known as the X-342 MH or X Boat 342 Masthead Rig) is the less common masthead sloop variant of the versatile cruiser-racer designed by Niels Jeppesen for X-Yachts of Denmark. Built from 1988 to 1994 alongside the more popular 3/4 fractional rig version, with a total of 105 hulls completed across both configurations (the masthead option was offered with wheel steering while the fractional typically paired with tiller), it was chosen by a minority of buyers, often for specific handicap rules, international markets, or those preferring a more traditional, stable platform with larger overlapping genoas and simpler tuning. The design retains the same stiff, powerful hull form with fiberglass sandwich construction, fin keel with lead ballast, and spade rudder, delivering strong all-around performance for racing or family coastal/offshore cruising with practical three-cabin accommodations. The masthead rig features a double-spreader aluminum mast (keel-stepped) and provides a more balanced, forgiving sail plan suited to heavier air or less experienced crews compared to the mainsail-dominant fractional setup.
