X Boat 3/4 Ton Fractional Rig
Description
The X-3/4 Ton (also known as the X Boat 3/4 Ton or X-3/4 Ton Mk 1) is a high-performance fractional sloop-rigged IOR racer designed by Niels Jeppesen for X-Yachts of Denmark. Produced from 1984 to 1990, it was developed as a production evolution of the successful X-102, optimized to the upper end of the IOR 3/4 Ton rating rule; a total of 84 hulls were built for the Mk 1 version. The design features lightweight fiberglass construction, a deep fin keel with lead ballast and spade rudder, emphasizing speed, stiffness, and excellent upwind performance while remaining competitive in IOR events (though the later Mk 2 variant achieved greater racing success, including multiple podium finishes at the 3/4 Ton World Cup). It offers minimal but functional interior accommodations suitable for racing crews or short coastal cruises, with a focus on pure performance rather than luxury. A Mk 2 version (sometimes listed separately with 51 hulls) followed in 1985–1990 with refinements including an updated keel and increased sail area.
