Rod Johnstone
Rodney "Rod" Stuart Johnstone (born January 15, 1937) is an American naval architect, sailor, and entrepreneur widely regarded as the founder and chief designer of J/Boats, the world's most successful builder of performance sailboats. With a career spanning over five decades, Johnstone revolutionized one-design racing and family cruising through innovative, lightweight designs that emphasized speed, simplicity, and joy on the water. His iconic J/24, sketched in his garage, sparked a global phenomenon, leading to over 14,000 J/Boats sailing in more than 35 countries today. A self-taught designer influenced by early racing experiences, Johnstone's philosophy—"design boats that plane and are stable"—has made J/Boats synonymous with exhilarating yet accessible sailing.
